CAREER GUIDES

A simple system for tracking GCC job applications

Keep a small application log so you know what you applied for, which CV you used, when to follow up and whether a source has changed.

Create one row for every serious application. Record the employer, role title, city or worksite, original source URL, date checked, date applied, closing date if published, CV version and the next action. This prevents the common problem of receiving an interview call and no longer remembering what the original job required.

Save the vacancy description or a PDF for your own records, but keep the original source URL too. Employers can edit or remove advertisements. Your saved copy helps you prepare for an interview, while the live source tells you whether the employer has changed or closed the role. Do not republish copyrighted job descriptions simply because you saved them for personal use.

Use a small set of statuses such as Researching, Applied, Interview, Waiting, Closed and Declined. Add a short note after every recruiter conversation. If someone contacts you about a role you never applied for, that log makes the discrepancy obvious and gives you a reason to verify the sender before sharing documents.

Follow up only when there is a sensible route and timeframe. Repeated daily messages do not create a stronger application. If the employer gives a response window, respect it. When no timeframe is provided, one concise follow-up after a reasonable interval is more professional than sending the same CV repeatedly.

Review the log weekly. Look for patterns in the roles that produce responses and the requirements you repeatedly lack. That information can improve your targeting, CV and training choices. A job-search tracker is valuable because it turns applications into evidence about your search rather than a stream of forgotten submissions.
